The Paris Saint-Germain football club is taking action against Arsenal fans who were caught on camera making monkey noises at PSG players as they headed to their bus after last night’s Champions League semi-final win.
Hermann Ebongu, secretary-general of SOS Racisme, a French anti-racism organization that has worked with PSG for 15 years, says the club won’t let the incident slide. “We’ll ask the authorities and Arsenal to help identify the fans involved and take legal action alongside PSG,” he told Le Parisien.
The disturbing footage was captured by members of PSG’s entourage as the team’s black players made their way to the bus parked in the Emirates Stadium garage. A group of fans were seen making monkey noises, prompting widespread outrage.
This is the second year in a row that PSG has faced racist abuse in the Champions League. Last season, Barcelona fans were caught on camera making Nazi salutes and monkey noises at PSG supporters during their quarter-final match. The UEFA governing body fined Barcelona €25,000.
SOS Racisme and PSG are urging authorities to take action against the fans involved. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for tougher penalties for racist behavior in football.
