PSD Political Appointments Surge at EMEL Under Carlos Moedas

Carlos Moedas, President of Lisbon City Council

The city’s sports scene often buzzes with news from the field. But sometimes, the real story unfolds in boardrooms, far from the stadium lights. Under Mayor Carlos Moedas, a closer look at EMEL, the city entity handling various operational aspects for local sports, reveals some intriguing choices. During his term, EMEL brought in several companies and individuals. Many have clear ties to the PSD political party. This pattern suggests a deliberate shift in who holds influence.

Filipe Anacoreta Correia currently oversees EMEL. But before him, the helm was gripped by Ângelo Pereira. Pereira is no stranger to the inner workings of power. He’s the top leader of the PSD’s local branch, essentially the architect behind their local party machinery. Just a quick glance at the social media feeds of local party groups shows these recent EMEL hires standing right alongside Pereira. It’s a visible, unambiguous alignment of forces.

One fresh face generating buzz is Martinho Caetano, now EMEL’s new Compliance Officer. This role, surprisingly, didn’t even exist before. EMEL told the sports journal SÁBADO that Caetano is a “certified accountant with over 30 years’ experience as an administrative and financial director in companies.” His credentials are solid. However, Caetano also serves as a PSD councilor for the Amadora city council. This dual role points to deep political roots that now extend into the city’s sports operations.
