The new PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro consoles aren’t as stable as gamers thought. Experts at Digital Foundry tested the VRR system, which unlocks higher frame rates in supported games. But they found an unexpected problem.
Some games like Hogwarts Legacy, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and Resident Evil 4 Remake had stuttering issues every 8 seconds when VRR was on. But games like God of War Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 didn’t have this issue in the first 20-30 minutes of testing.
Digital Foundry tested these games on multiple TVs and found the same problem. But when they tested Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 on an Xbox Series X, it didn’t have this issue – even when they switched TVs. They think it might be a console error. The NTSC console works at 119.88Hz, but it thinks it’s working at 120Hz. This tiny difference causes the stuttering.
For now, Sony hasn’t said anything about this problem. But it’s likely they’ll release an update to fix it in the future.
