Provide training to strengthen comprehensive waste management

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources held a workshop on Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) for two with the aim of strengthening the capacities of its officials, to move towards a circular economy.

The training was carried out with the support of the projects Prevention of Marine Residues in the Caribbean Sea (Promar) and Caribe Circular, both financed by the German Government, and the environmental organization Parley for the Oceans.

The Director of Solid Waste of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, John Grullón, said that for the Dominican Republic it is necessary to promote public policies and regulations that promote and accompany the development and implementation of REP systems.

The Deputy Chief at the German Embassy in Santo Domingo, Katrin Werdermann, stated that one of the priorities between the Dominican Republic and Germany is the fight against the generation of plastic waste and pollution of the seas.

Jan Janssen, director of the PROMAR project, said that the workshop offers a space to define the steps towards an Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) plan in the country.

Eva Ringhof, director of the Caribe Circular project, expressed that together with the other organizations she supports the ministry in its initiatives towards a comprehensive management of solid waste.

With the enactment of the Law on Integral Management and Co-processing of Solid Waste (Law No. 225-20) the country seeks to offer a legal framework towards a circular economy, in which waste is reused throughout the value chain by legal commitment, under a system that facilitates socioeconomic incentives and promotes environmental sustainability.

The note states that andn Dominican Republic are generated -approximately- 88,000 tons of plastic waste per year, of which only about 22 are managed,000 leaving the rest polluting the environment, the seas and rivers.

The Extended Producer Responsibility (REP) is a type of public environmental policy focused on extending the responsibilities of manufacturers in all phases of the total life cycle of their products, but placing emphasis on the recovery, recycling and final disposal of the products. themselves.
