The brothers behind HGTV’s hit show, Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott, might seem like a perfectly synced duo on screen. But like many siblings, their journey hasn’t been without a few bumps, especially when money entered the picture. It turns out their bank accounts aren’t quite identical, and that used to be a big deal.
Jonathan, who is 47, recently opened up about a past disagreement with his twin brother. He explained how their roles on the show led to some tension. "I used to film three times as much as Drew," Jonathan shared during a chat with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live on July 10. He explained that Drew would appear at the start and end of episodes, while he was "there doing all the work."
Jonathan remembered hitting a point after a decade of filming where he confronted Drew. "Shouldn’t I be making triple what you’re paid?" he asked. Drew’s reply was clear: "You can never bring that up again." Drew quickly chimed in during the interview, noting he handles the contracts. Jonathan confirmed it was a very real argument between them.
Away from the cameras, both brothers are deeply involved in construction work. Jonathan holds a certified contractor’s license. Still, both have spent years handling home renovations. Jonathan was also a licensed real estate agent. This means they’ve seen the renovation process from both the building and the buying sides.
The Property Brothers brand extends far beyond their initial HGTV reality show, which first aired in 2011, and its spin-offs. Their empire includes a range of other ventures. They have their own furniture line, and they’ve put out books, music, and even a mobile app.
Drew pointed out the scale of their business ventures. "Our product line has included 12,500 home items," he stated. They also manage a portfolio of multi-family real estate. He stressed that a lot of their work happens away from what viewers see on television.
Jonathan discussed their growing business with Us Weekly in 2019. He mentioned that fans often don’t grasp the full scope of their activities. "People don’t quite get it," he said at the time. Many see them as just design guys who do a TV show. They don’t realize how much the brothers have built their brand. They also use their platform to support non-profit groups and charities, focusing on causes they truly care about.
The Property Brothers are currently in the final year of a three-year contract with HGTV, which they signed in 2022. This deal brought them several new projects on the network. HGTV announced recently that two of their series would face delays. Chasing the West is now set to premiere on July 30. The second season of Don’t Hate Your House With the Property Brothers has been pushed back to "later this year."
