Project Hail Mary Opens To $141M Global Box Office

The sci-fi adaptation Project Hail Mary generated $80.5 million across 4,007 North American screens during its opening weekend, concluding Sunday. The Amazon MGM Studios release, starring Ryan Gosling, earned a worldwide launch total of $140.9 million.

The opening weekend gross marks the highest-earning theatrical debut of 2026 to date. The film secured the second-largest opening weekend for an original, non-franchise property over the past decade, trailing only the $82.4 million launch of Oppenheimer in 2023.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir. The production carried a budget of approximately $200 million. Premium large-format screens and IMAX theaters accounted for 56% of the weekend’s total domestic gross.

Audiences awarded the film an “A” CinemaScore, while aggregated critical reviews reached a 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The $80.5 million domestic figure sets a new opening weekend record for Amazon MGM Studios, surpassing the $58 million debut of Creed III.
