A professor at Texas A&M-Commerce University failed more than half of his class.e after ChatGPT falsely claimed that he wrote his works, prompting the university to withhold their diplomas, Rolling Stone magazine reported Tuesday. In an email sent to his class of seniors on Monday, Dr. Jared Mumm said he had submitted three of his latest essay assignments to OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot. to test if any students used the software to write their papers.
“I copy and paste your responses into this account and Chat GTP (sic) will tell me if the program generated the content,” Mumm, who teaches agricultural sciences and natural resources, wrote in the email, misspelling ChatGPT.
“I put everyone’s last three assignments on two separate occasions and if both were claimed by Chat GTP, it received a 0,” he added.
As a result, the university withheld the awarding of official diplomas to most senior students, who had already graduated, Rolling Stone reported. Mumm offered the class the opportunity to redo the assignment to avoid a failing grade. However, ChatGPT was not designed to identify AI-created content, including your own. There are several other programs including Winston AI and Content at Scalewho can do this.
The email was originally posted to Reddit by someone named DearKick. In a follow-up post, DearKick wrote that several students wrote to Mumm to show him their timestamped Google Docs in an effort to prove they weren’t using ChatGPT.
However, the professor “ignored the emails and instead just responded on his grading software with the comments: ‘I don’t rate AI nonsense'”, wrote DearKick.
DearKick also said that a student had been exonerated and that Mumm had apologized to him. Two other students admitted to using ChatGPT earlier in the semester.which “no doubt greatly complicates the situation for those who did not,” they added.
Texas A&M-Commerce said in a statement: “University officials are investigating the incident and developing policies to address the use or misuse of AI technology in the classroom.” “A&M-Commerce confirms that no student failed the class or was prevented from graduating due to this issue. Dr. Jared Mumm, the class teacher, is working individually with students regarding their latest writing assignments,” they added.
The use of AI technology in education has become a controversial issue. While some schools in Texas have banned students from using ChatGPT, others are trying to incorporate the AI chatbot.
