Production of non-fossil aviation fuels will triple by 2022, according to Iata

Global production of non-fossil fuels for aviation will triple this year, the leading airline organization said on Wednesday.

"Sustainable aviation fuel production will reach at least 300 million liters by 2022"compared to 100 million in 2021, highlighted the International Air Transport Association (Iata).

"More optimistic calculations estimate that total production could reach 450 million liters" for these fuels, made for example from biomass or used oils, added the Iata, on the occasion of "press days" at its headquarters in Geneva.

Sustainable fuels are "on the threshold of an increase in capacities and exponential production"with the intermediate objective of 30,000 million liters a year in 2030, stressed Iata, which groups 300 companies that claim 83% of world air traffic.

Iata adopted in 2021 the ambition of "net zero emissions" of CO2 for air transport in 2050, endorsed last October by the States represented at the United Nations.

The sector currently contributes to approximately 3% of global emissions.
