Proconsumidor resolves 500 cases of rises in housing prices; ask to go to that institution in case of problems

The executive director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Proconsumidor), Eddy Alcántara, reported this Tuesday that this entity has resolved more than 500 cases of conflicts arising between construction companies and home buyers.

The official explained that the decisions made on these conflicts have been through reasoned agreements that favor the interests of consumers, “without harming the rights of the construction sector”.

He stated that most of the cases decided have to do with complaints filed by home buyers for price increases by construction companies.

“The decisions taken on these cases have been well reasoned, in which the interests of the purchasers of these properties have been defended and the rights of the construction sector have been preserved,” he added.

He also said that about 90% of the resolutions presented there for this type of confrontation have been reconciled between the construction sectors and the purchasers or consumers, “which guarantees the effectiveness of the intervention of this institution in this type of conflict” .

Alcántara maintained that the situation generated tranquility among consumers or home buyers who have made their claims in this institution.

In that order, the head of Pro Consumidor urged citizens who have conflicts of this nature and feel that their rights have been affected to go to that entity “so that they are guaranteed a fair application of the rules, according to the contracts signed between the parties.

“We call home buyers who are presenting this problem, to go to Proconsumidor, where we are giving answers to all those real estate cases,” he insisted.

He reiterated that with these resolutions issued by that institution, an attempt has been made to act in accordance with the law, “always guaranteeing the rights of consumers and also understanding that the importance of the country’s productive sectors must be preserved.”

The director of the entity that defends consumers gave a guarantee of a solution to all cases that generate a situation of confrontation between providers (constructors) and consumers (acquirers) of the purchase of houses in the process of construction, making use of the Constitution of the Republic, the Law 358-05 and the other sectoral laws of the Dominican Republic.

“Every person has the right to have quality goods and services, objective, truthful and timely information on the content and characteristics of the products and services that they use or consume, under the provisions and standards established by law, which establishes article 53 of the Constitution,” he added.

He also recalled that since July 18, the process of issuing and notifying resolutions to people who have filed claims against suppliers for an increase in the price of real estate originally contracted began.

The official noted that since that date this measure was taken due to the frequent complaints of citizens in the face of increases, often disproportionate, in the cost of housing established by contract.
