ProConsumidor closes business in SFM for adulterated drinks caused deaths

He National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (ProConsumidor) ordered the closure of several establishments in San Francisco Macorís for the sale of adulterated alcoholic beverages that caused the death of two people, and announced that the owners will be brought to justice in the next few hours.

The entity’s director, Eddy Alcántara, said that early this Thursday brigades of inspectors from the institution began a broad operating in the La Javiela neighborhood, in the 27 de Febrero sector, in the Duarte province, where the adulterated drinks that caused the deaths of Lorenzo Antonio Morillo Gómez, 67, and Rafael Antonio Mercedes Hernández, 55, were sold.

The official indicated that among the grocery stores that were closed for adulterated drinks, which also keep serious condition two other people La Altagracia and La Azuquita are located at the San Vicente de Paul Hospital in that city, the first located on A street, near the Javiela bridge, and the second on 8 Duvergé street, in that sector.

“Those responsible for these deaths will be sent to the courts of the Republic so that the full weight of the law falls on them,” added the official.

Alcántara reported that the operation was extended to other sectors adjacent to the place where these deaths occurred and counterfeit alcoholic beverages in gallons and bottles were found in other establishments.

He explained that the closure of those businesses will be final “until the courts decide on the investigation and actions against those responsible for these events.”

The head of ProConsumidor stated that these adulterated alcohol deaths generated surprises for the authorities of the different bodies that have to ensure non-commercialization in the area, “since permanent vigilance is maintained to prevent the sale of these products that put the health of consumers at risk.”

He warned that anyone who sells these types of counterfeit or adulterated products will be subject to legal action “and their trade will be closed in a precautionary manner until the courts of the Republic order any type of measure.”
