Private plane crashes in forest in Cameroon with 11 people on board

An air disaster has just hit Cameroon and the fate of the passengers is currently unknown. A plane from a private company maintaining hydrocarbon pipelines crashed on Wednesday in a forest in the center of the country with 11 people on board, and the rescue services are trying to find the occupants, we learned from the Ministry of transportation.

Air traffic services “lost radio contact with the aircraft” and then the aircraft was “located in the forest” near Nanga Eboko, some 150 km northeast of Yaoundé, the country’s capital. “He crashed to the ground” and “our teams are trying to see if it is possible to save people,” confirmed a ministry official who requested anonymity.

“Land resources are currently en route to the site”

The aircraft was chartered by the Cameroon Oil Transportation Company (COTCO) said this source and another senior official of the aeronautical authorities, also on condition of anonymity. COTCO is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of a pipeline between Cameroon and neighboring Chad.

The plane, whose type and brand have not been made public, was flying from Yaoundé-Nsimalen airport to Belabo, in the east of the country. “Land resources are currently en route to the site” of the crash of the aircraft to “provide assistance to its occupants”, explained the ministry.

A previous disaster in 2007

The last air disaster in Cameroon dates back to the night of May 4 to 5, 2007. A Kenya Airways Boeing 737-800 connecting Douala to Abidjan then crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from the airport of the economic capital of Cameroon under a violent storm. Its 114 occupants had been killed, including 34 Cameroonians.

Three years later, a Cameroonian civil aviation investigation had concluded that there was a pilot error, the captain not having detected a dangerous inclination of the aircraft and then not having straightened its trajectory in time. Since then, Cameroon has only been the scene of minor air accidents involving small tourist planes or helicopters.
