Britain’s Prince Andrew will defend himself as a civilian in America against allegations of sexual abuse. This means, among other things, that he relinquishes his title of royal highness. He also surrenders all his military titles.

According to Buckingham Palace, Andrew, the Duke of York, will also not take on any public duties for the foreseeable future.

The New York court yesterday cleared the way for a civil lawsuit against Prince Andrew, brought by the American Virginia Giuffre. She says the prince sexually assaulted her three times in 2001, when she was 17 years old.

Prince Andrew denies the allegations.

Giuffre asked for support from the British two years ago in an interview with the BBC program Panorama:
