Washington. US President Joe Biden held an online meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, saying his goal is to ensure that “competition does not turn into confrontation.” The two leaders held this meeting in the context of the current tense relations between the United States and China.

Biden has criticized Beijing on a variety of issues, including the human rights abuses of the Uighur community in northwest China, the crushing of democratic protests in Hong Kong and the military aggression against autonomous Taiwan. At the same time, Xi officials have accused the United States of interfering in China’s internal affairs, targeting the Biden government.

“As leaders of China and the United States, it is our responsibility to ensure that competition between our countries does not turn into conflict. Instead, it remains simple and direct competition,” Biden said at the beginning of the meeting.

Biden wanted to meet Xi face-to-face rather than online, but China’s president hasn’t left the country until shortly before the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The White House again proposed an online meeting, so that the two leaders could have a candid conversation about the tension in the relationship.

Xi told Biden that both sides needed to improve communication. Both leaders have traveled together when both were vice presidents of their respective countries. Xi described Biden as an “old friend” and said, “President Biden, I look forward to working with you, building mutual understanding, taking proactive measures, and moving China-US relations in a positive direction.”
