The first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, confirmed, this Friday, August 27, the holding of an internal primary in order to appoint the official candidate of the party for the presidential election in April 2022.
Candidate for his re-election as first secretary of the PS on September 16, Olivier Faure assured that this “militant vote” would concern some 50,000 of them to take place in one or two rounds depending on the number of applicants.
But the strong man of the PS has also and above all definitively swept away the idea of a “primary citizen”, such as the party had known in 2011. “There will be, as it is envisaged by the statutes, a militant vote (…) I do not want, like all Socialists, to relive moments of division which serve our candidacy more than they serve it. It is not useful to provoke overbidding, to create the conditions for a guaranteed defeat, ”said Olivier Faure at the microphone of France Inter.
Anne Hidalgo as favorite
The announcement made by Olivier Faure met with the approval of another socialist tenor, namely Stéphane Le Foll. The former Minister of Agriculture of François Hollande thus congratulated himself on Twitter for the upcoming organization of this primary, by considering himself “very happy”. One way to stand out from his former colleague, the former Minister of the Economy Arnaud Montebourg, who should announce his direct candidacy for the supreme office in the coming days.
I am very happy to have obtained the organization of a primary before the presidential election. Delighted that the @Socialist Party regains a taste for debate. https://t.co/kbWZGksjKv

Another sizeable candidacy that seems more and more imminent: that of the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, already a favorite in this future socialist primary.
The one who is to hold a speech in Blois (Loir-et-Cher) this Friday afternoon has also received the support of Olivier Faure. “It is the best of us to represent ourselves”, assured the first secretary of the PS during his speech on the radio this morning.
