A deciding method visibly adopted by the French. According to an Ifop poll for Le Journal du dimanche, a majority of respondents say they are in favor of the organization of primaries, on the right and on the left, in order to identify candidates for the 2022 presidential election.
In detail, 59% of those questioned plead for the organization of a primary on the left, and 58% on the right.
These proportions are even more important among supporters of both political camps. Respondents saying they are close to the left are 71% to demand a primary (80% among supporters of La France insoumise), and 64% to the right (66% among supporters of the Republicans).
“It is not a question of a very strong inclination for the primary, but it entered the customs”, comments for the JDD Frédéric Dabi, Director General of Ifop. “In the eyes of supporters, it is a way to limit the overflow of candidates,” he continues. Before the 2017 presidential election, right and left had held primaries, won respectively by François Fillon and Benoît Hamon. Neither had qualified for the second round of the election.
a primary at EELV in September
On the right, this poll further increases the pressure on Xavier Bertrand, who insists that he does not intend to participate in such a process. Unlike Valérie Pécresse, Philippe Juvin, Eric Ciotti and Michel Barnier, the four candidates for the moment declared for a primary of the right, whose organization is not recorded. The leadership of the Republicans, not very keen on the idea, will launch a large poll of 15,000 supporters on Monday to test various candidates and see if one of them stands out in public opinion.
On the left side, only Europe Ecologie-Les Verts has endorsed the principle of a primary – open – which will be organized in September. The holding of a primary in the Socialist Party – internal – was confirmed by the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure on Friday on France Inter. A single primary for all the left-wing parties seems excluded for the time being, even if a citizen collective is trying to work on this project, which he called “The popular primary”, to lead to a common candidacy in 2022.
