Tuesday was a good day for Portuguese tennis hopefuls in Porto. Three more players booked their spots in the second round of the CT Porto Cup, a Challenger 75 tournament. Frederico Silva, Francisco Rocha, and Tiago Torres all moved forward. They joined Pedro Araújo, who had already advanced.
Frederico Silva, ranked 255th, had a tough battle. He beat Spain’s Max Alcalá, who is 411th, in a three-set match. The scores were 6-3, 4-6, and 6-2. Francisco Rocha, ranked 812th, had an easier time on court. He was leading 4-2 against American Max McKennon (469th) when McKennon had to stop playing.
The biggest story of the day might belong to Tiago Torres, ranked 1028th. He pulled off a fantastic win against the Czech Republic’s Hynek Barton, ranked 292nd. Torres won 6-3, 1-6, and 6-4. This victory marks the best result of Torres’s career so far. It’s always exciting to see a player reach new heights.
However, not everyone had a smooth run. Henrique Rocha, who is 167th in the world, faced an early exit. He did not make it past the first round. Despite that setback, the tournament still sees four Portuguese players making a strong push into the next stage.
