Portuguese security forces are undertaking a significant fleet upgrade with an investment of approximately $21.7 million, though electric vehicles will constitute a minimal part of the acquisition.
The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) and Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) are set to acquire more than 600 new vehicles, including motorcycles, vans, and buses.
Despite the substantial expenditure, only 10 of these vehicles will be electric, costing roughly $406,500.
This modernization effort aims to enhance the transport capabilities and operational response across the country. The new fleet is expected to boost mobility and effectiveness in various operations, from urban patrolling to rural interventions.
The initiative also seeks to provide greater comfort and safety for officers while reducing maintenance costs and extending vehicle durability. Officials anticipate the vehicles will be equipped with modern communication and monitoring technology, improving coordination among units.
The procurement process is divided into 45 lots, with all new vehicles expected to be delivered by the end of next year. This investment forms part of a broader strategy that also includes specialized training and technological updates for security forces.
Authorities deem this reinforcement crucial for addressing evolving public security challenges. These include the prevention of crime, road accidents, and effective response to critical emergency situations.
