Portuguese Olympic Chief Calls 2027 Mediterranean Beach Games ‘Unique Opportunity’

Portugal is positioning its role as host of the 2027 Mediterranean Beach Games as a strategic opportunity for international projection and enhanced regional cooperation, according to the head of its Olympic committee.

Fernando Gomes, President of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP), described the organization of the Games as a “moment of high relevance” for the nation’s sports movement, its host communities, and the country at large. He spoke during an Extraordinary General Assembly of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (CIJM) in Alvor.

Gomes emphasized that taking on the event signifies accepting a logistical, sporting, and cultural challenge. He added it is also “a unique opportunity for international projection of our country, our sea and our beautiful beaches, our federations and our athletes.”

The Mediterranean Games serve as “a platform for dialogue and promotion of the values of friendship, respect and excellence,” Gomes stated. Portugal aims to contribute organizational expertise from major international sporting events, quality infrastructure, experienced personnel, and security.

The COP president expressed a desire for Portugal to play a more active role within the CIJM. He believes cooperation among Southern European, North African, and Middle Eastern countries extends beyond sports, representing an example of unity, peace, cultural exchange, and socio-economic development.

Gomes thanked the municipalities of Portimão and Lagoa for their collaboration. He articulated a wish for the 2027 Mediterranean Beach Games to be “the best” ever.

The Games, scheduled for September 2027, will take place on Praia da Rocha and Alvor beaches in Portimão, and Praia Grande in Lagoa. The full sports program for the competition is expected to be revealed during the ongoing CIJM assembly.
