Mateus Fernandes is joining West Ham, a move that has the young midfielder buzzing. The English club announced Friday that Fernandes signed a five-season contract. This 21-year-old talent arrives from Southampton, marking a fresh start for his promising career.
Fernandes couldn’t hide his excitement. “I am very happy to be here,” he shared. “Playing for West Ham makes me very excited. I see this as a big step for me.” He called West Ham a “huge club,” praising its project, stadium, and the city itself. “I want to play good football,” he added, emphasizing that he wants to enjoy the game, not just run and score.
West Ham’s coach, Graeme Potter, clearly values Fernandes’s potential. Potter described him as a young player who has had an “incredible process” early in his career. “He gained important experience in the English League last year,” Potter noted, referring to Fernandes’s time with Southampton. The coach sees Fernandes as someone who can truly improve what the club is building.
Fernandes began his youth journey at Olhanense and then Sporting. He spent a season on loan with Estoril Praia, gaining crucial match practice. Last season, he made his English League debut while playing for Southampton, a team that faced relegation. West Ham paid over 40 million euros to bring him in, showing their belief in his future contributions.
