Portuguese investigators extensively monitored former Prime Minister António Costa’s communications for an anti-corruption probe but found only two of nearly 50 interactions relevant to the case.
The surveillance on Costa involved nearly 50 phone calls and text messages, summarized in official records for “Operação Influencer,” a high-profile corruption inquiry. Despite this extensive monitoring, law enforcement officials ultimately deemed just two of these communications significant to their investigation.
The former prime minister’s communications came under scrutiny as part of the probe. His voice frequently appeared in the transcripts handled by agents from Portugal’s Public Security Police (PSP).
Initial monitoring included a phone call between Costa and José Pedro Matos Fernandes, the former Environment Minister. They arranged to meet for coffee to discuss an “environmental strategic assessment.”
“Operação Influencer” has targeted alleged influence peddling and corruption involving government officials. The probe has led to a significant political shake-up in Portugal.
