The beach volleyball dreams for Portugal’s top duo, João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, wrapped up at the European Championship in Dusseldorf, Germany. The pair, who are three-time national champions, finished their run in 17th place. Their journey ended after a nail-biting 2-1 loss to the Dutch team of Alexander Brouwer and Steven Van de Velde. It was a tough match that decided who went home.
Pedrosa and Campos started strong against the Dutch. They grabbed the first set with a comfortable 21-17 win. But the Netherlands squad fought back, taking the second set 21-15. This evened things up, setting the stage for a dramatic deciding set. The Portuguese pair gave it their all, pushing the game to the very limit. In the end, they lost by the narrowest of margins, 19-17, in a true winner-take-all battle.
To get to that elimination match, Pedrosa and Campos had to fight hard in their group. They secured second place in Group A, which moved them into the Round of 24. That crucial win came against Latvia’s Ardis Bedritis and Arturs Rinkevics. It was a grinding 2-1 victory, with set scores of 21-14, 19-21, and a decisive 15-11 in the final set.
Their tournament started earlier in the week, on Wednesday. In their opening match, the Portuguese duo faced the German brothers Jonas and Benedikt Sagstetter. That first game was also a tight affair, despite the 2-0 loss. Pedrosa and Campos kept things close, losing the sets 26-24 and 21-18. This European Championship was the second one in a row for Pedrosa and Campos, showing their consistent presence at the sport’s highest level.
