Portuguese Coach Vicens Admits “Anxiety” After 3-2 in Cup Win

Sp. Braga advanced to the round of 16 in the Taça de Portugal with a 4-2 victory over Nacional, a result that left coach Carlos Vicens both satisfied with the outcome and critical of his team’s performance.

Vicens expressed happiness about achieving the objective of progressing in the cup. However, he immediately highlighted the team’s struggle to convert numerous scoring opportunities.

“We lack the conversion of such a high number of arrivals in the opponent’s area, a large number of opportunities,” Vicens stated. “And I say this in a game where we scored four goals… We have to improve that.”

The coach acknowledged a period of anxiety within the squad when Nacional scored two quick goals, narrowing Braga’s lead to 3-2. “That caused a certain anxiety,” he said.

Despite the momentary pressure, Vicens praised his players’ personality, noting they continued to attack. The team ultimately secured the 4-2 scoreline with a goal from a set piece.

He underscored that while the objective was met, there are clear aspects requiring correction.

Ricardo Horta was substituted at halftime, a decision Vicens explained was to “refresh that area of the field.” Diego entered the game, having been motivated after missing national team play.

Vicens relayed his halftime message to the players, demanding “the same rigor, maximum effort from the first minute, incessant work and dynamism.”
