Portuguese Club Lourosa’s ‘Home’ Match Moved 310 Miles to Algarve

A Portuguese second-tier soccer club will play a critical “home” league match more than 500 kilometers (310 miles) from its base this weekend, highlighting the logistical difficulties faced by teams without a permanent venue.

Lusitânia de Lourosa is scheduled to host União de Leiria on Sunday evening in the 11th round of the Liga Portugal 2. The game will be played at Estádio do Algarve, located in the far south of Portugal.

The journey from Lourosa’s northern home region to the Algarve stadium spans over 500 kilometers. This creates a significant burden for any supporters wishing to attend the match.

The relocation is a direct consequence of ongoing renovations at Lourosa’s own stadium, which have been underway since the summer.

As a result, the recently promoted club has been forced to play its home games at various borrowed venues throughout the season.

Previous league matches have seen Lourosa utilize stadiums in Famalicão, Pedroso (Vila Nova de Gaia), and Olival.

For a Portuguese Cup fixture, the team hosted Resende at Complexo Desportivo de Azevido, the home ground of Rebordosa.

An earlier proposed alternative, Estádio Cidade de Barcelos, was deemed unavailable by the Barcelos club. Liga Portugal, the national league organizing body, confirmed the unavailability was due to pitch maintenance.
