Portugal’s Ribeiro, Baptista Defend K2 500m World Title in Milan Final

João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista stand out at the Canoe World Championships

The stakes are incredibly high for João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista this Sunday in Milan. These two champion paddlers have earned their spot in the K2 500-meter World Championship final. They will hit the water aiming to defend the gold medal they famously won last year in Germany. It’s a classic story of top athletes under pressure, looking to repeat past glory.

On Saturday, the duo showed exactly why they are champions. They took the lead right from the start of their semi-final race. Then, they smartly managed their energy through the second half. They crossed the finish line in 1 minute, 29.28 seconds. This time was the second-best across all three heats. They edged out a pair competing under a neutral flag by just 24 hundredths of a second. Hungary’s team finished only 25 hundredths behind them. It was a close call, but they kept their cool.

Messias Baptista shared his thoughts on their strategy. “It was a good race for us,” he explained. “Getting out in front early let us save some energy in the middle part. By the end, we just waited to see if anyone would really push us.” He added, “We didn’t need to go all out, avoiding that final struggle. Sure, it’s tough and it hurt a bit, but we controlled it well. Now we’re in the final.”

This strong performance came just a day after another huge win. João and Messias had just celebrated an unprecedented world title in the K4 500-meter race. For that event, they teamed up with Gustavo Gonçalves and Pedro Casinha, who were new to the world stage. Their recent K4 success has definitely boosted their profile. However, this increased status won’t change their focus on Sunday’s K2 final. They are still hungry for more medals.

Messias views the pressure positively. “They always say pressure is a privilege, and we handle it well,” he noted. “Honestly, I think it’s easier when we’re the favorites. You can expect our absolute best tomorrow, as always.” He made it clear that their K4 win doesn’t change a thing. “Having a great result in other events doesn’t affect our drive for what we want to achieve tomorrow,” he emphasized.

João Ribeiro confirmed that both paddlers feel very confident for the K2 500 final. He believes the race will be a fierce battle, “decided attack by attack.” He knows these top-level races are always incredibly close. “That’s how it was when we became world champions,” he recalled. “We won by a tiny margin.” He also remembered their performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics. “In Paris 2024, we finished sixth, and we were so close to a medal, by just a hair.” João concluded, “That’s just how things are. We’ll fight hard, do our absolute best, and then see what the outcome is.”

The pair admitted that Friday had been “very exhausting.” It wasn’t just the K4 500-meter final that wore them out. They also faced a lot of media attention and requests. Despite the fatigue, they pulled through.

João Ribeiro shared his hopeful outlook for Sunday. “Today I felt a little hesitant because of all that,” he admitted. “But we still had a good race and managed our effort well.” He’s focusing on recovery now. “Now it’s about a good afternoon to rest, a good night’s sleep, and tomorrow we will certainly be at 100%.” He ended with a touch of emotion: “We came here with a dream, and I really hope it comes true.”

The highly anticipated final is set for Sunday at 09:54 AM, Portugal time.
