Drivers get 12 points when they first get their license. The Points System punishes bad driving and rewards good habits. Over a million drivers have been penalized.
How it works
The system started in 2016. Since then, almost a million drivers lost points. Last year, 121,000 drivers lost points – a 14% increase.
Over 3,600 drivers lost all their points. This means they can’t drive for two years. To get their license back, they have to retake their tests.

Drivers start with 12 points. Bad driving costs points:
- 2 points for serious offenses
- 4 points for very serious offenses
- 6 points for road crimes
If a driver behaves, they can get up to 15 points back after three years.
