Portuguese winger Carlos Forbs made his senior national team debut Sunday, helping secure the country’s qualification for next year’s World Cup, and immediately set his sights on continued national and club success.
Forbs, 19, played his first minutes for Portugal in their decisive 9-1 victory over Armenia. The win in the final group stage match guaranteed Portugal a spot in the upcoming World Cup tournament.
Speaking after the match, the Club Brugge player expressed immense satisfaction. “It’s a very special day for me, for my family, I’m very proud,” Forbs told reporters.
He added, “We got the win, I think I played well, and we qualified for the World Cup.” Forbs described the week with the national squad as “incredible,” noting a positive reception from his teammates.
Forbs affirmed his commitment to earning future call-ups to the national team. “I think I have to keep doing what I’ve been doing at the club,” he said, vowing to “continue to work and do my best.”
National coach Roberto Martínez had included Forbs as a notable new face for the November training camp. Forbs’ debut underscores Martínez’s strategy of integrating fresh talent.
The young winger also confirmed the squad remained confident despite a prior loss against Ireland. “We were always confident,” Forbs stated.
Looking ahead, Forbs commented on Club Brugge’s upcoming Champions League fixture against Sporting on November 26 in Lisbon. “It will be an important game, I hope my team wins and a little goal [from me] too,” he concluded. “May the best win.”
