Portugal’s EV Charging Soars, Hits 6 Million Charges in Nine Months

Portugal has emerged as a European frontrunner in electric vehicle adoption, with charging operations soaring past 6.4 million in the first nine months of 2025, supported by a rapidly expanding public charging network.

From January through September 2025, the country’s National Charging Network (RNC) recorded over 6.4 million charging sessions, consuming more than 144,600 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy. This represents increases of 48% in charges and 61% in energy consumption compared to the same period in 2024.

The number of distinct users also grew significantly, exceeding 363,000 since January. This marks a 58% rise from the previous year.

In September alone, Portugal logged over 767,000 charging operations, a 43% jump from September 2024. These operations were carried out by approximately 131,000 unique users, an increase of 47% year-over-year.

Total energy consumed during September reached 17.4 gigawatt-hours (GWh). This figure indicates a 54% growth compared to September 2024.

The public charging infrastructure has expanded to meet this escalating demand. By the end of September, the network comprised more than 6,880 charging stations, housing roughly 12,860 charging points across the nation.

Of these, 2,633 points are designated as fast or ultra-fast chargers. This enhances accessibility, efficiency, and nationwide coverage.

Portugal’s network currently boasts an average of 118 charging points per 100 kilometers of road. It also provides 160 charging points per 100,000 inhabitants.

These statistics, provided by Mobi.e, underscore Portugal’s sustained commitment to fostering greener, more accessible, and innovative electric mobility.
