Portugal Women’s National Team Faces USA in October Friendlies

The football calendar is always turning, and October brings a pair of captivating matches. Portugal’s women’s national team will cross paths with the mighty United States. These games are set for October 23 and 26. Both federations made the announcement this Monday, sending ripples of excitement through the football community.

These upcoming friendly clashes are more than just exhibition games. They slot right into the international window for national team duties. The first whistle will blow at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. Days later, the action shifts to Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, for the second encounter.

For Portugal, these matches are a big deal. They offer another chance to test their mettle against a truly formidable opponent. The United States team holds a stellar record, having won the World Cup more times than any other nation. They also hold the current Olympic gold medal. “Portugal is a growing team,” noted US coach Emma Hayes. Her comments were shared by the United States Soccer Federation. She added that the Portuguese players will be “highly motivated.” Hayes views these games as “another opportunity for us to develop,” too.

This isn’t just any face-off. It’s the first time these two teams have met since their memorable clash at the 2023 World Cup. That day, in Auckland, New Zealand, Portugal pulled off a stunning 0-0 draw. It was the third and final group stage match for both sides. That result pushed the US, who are currently ranked number one in the world, into the knockout rounds. For Portugal, it marked their exit in their debut appearance at the global showpiece.

Before that incredible draw, Portugal had faced the US ten times in friendly matches. They had lost every single one. The goal difference was a staggering 0-39, showing just how dominant the US had been. The Americans boast four World Cup titles from 1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019. They have also won five Olympic gold medals in 1996, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2024. Portugal, currently ranked 22nd by FIFA, has come a long way.

Coach Francisco Neto’s team is back in action after their recent run in the European Championship. That tournament, the 14th edition, took place in Switzerland from July 2 until Sunday. Portugal faced their third consecutive group stage exit. In the final, England successfully defended their title, beating reigning world champions Spain 3-1 on penalties. The score was 1-1 after regular time and extra time.

After their matches against Portugal, the US team has another friendly planned. They will play an unannounced opponent on October 29. This match will be held at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. This stadium holds special significance. It’s the first ever built specifically for women’s football in the United States, opening its doors in March 2024.
