Portugal’s women’s handball team secured a narrow 26-25 victory over Iceland in Matosinhos on Wednesday, snatching a crucial win in the final seconds of their 2026 European Championship qualifier.
The decisive goal came from Patrícia Rodrigues, who converted a 7-meter free throw to break a 25-25 deadlock.
Immediately following Rodrigues’ strike, goalkeeper Jessica Ferreira made a critical save from Iceland’s 9-meter free throw attempt, sealing the win as time expired.
The dramatic finish capped an intensely contested match where Portugal had led at halftime, 14-13.
Portugal’s lead never extended beyond two goals in the second half. Iceland managed to equalize at 25-25 in the final minute before the late Portuguese heroics.
Joana Resende and Carmen Figueiredo were instrumental for Portugal, each scoring six goals. Patrícia Rodrigues added four goals, including the game-winner.
Ferreira was also a standout, making 13 saves with a 35% efficiency rate.
The victory marks a winning start for Portugal in Group 4 qualification. They now sit tied for second place with two points, alongside the Faroe Islands.
Montenegro leads the group with four points after two matches, while Iceland remains without points.
