Portugal’s under-21 handball team is feeling optimistic about their chances in the World Championship. Coach Carlos Martingo is confident they can beat Algeria and Canada, which he considers the more accessible opponents, before facing off against Croatia, the toughest team in their group.
Martingo observed over 30 players before selecting the final 16 for the tournament, giving him a broader range of options than usual. He believes these players are the best representatives of Portugal right now. The team had two tough tests against Germany, the current World Champions, but Martingo saw positive signs. The players got to try out different defensive and offensive strategies, and everyone got a chance to play.
Nine players from the team that won silver at the 2024 European under-20 Championship will be joining the World Championship squad, except for António Machado, who is injured. Portugal’s first game is against Algeria on Wednesday, June 18th.
