Portugal: 23,724 Traffic Violations in Six Days, Most for Speeding

Portuguese authorities detected 23,724 traffic infractions, with nearly 15,000 for speeding, across the country in just one week during an enforcement campaign in October 2025.

The vast majority of these offenses, 14,829, were for exceeding the speed limit, which authorities identify as a leading cause of road accidents in Portugal. Over 5.6 million vehicles were inspected during the operation.

The “Travel Without Haste” campaign ran from October 14 to 20, 2025. It was a joint initiative by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the Public Security Police (PSP).

This campaign formed part of the National Inspection Plan 2025, which aims to encourage safer driving habits and reduce the number of accidents, fatalities, and serious injuries on Portuguese roads. Authorities increased enforcement in high-risk areas and conducted public awareness activities targeting drivers.

The ANSR emphasized that excessive speed significantly diminishes reaction time and escalates the severity of consequences in the event of a collision. Security forces urged all drivers to consistently prioritize moderate speeds to foster safer roads and decrease traffic accident rates in Portugal.
