Portimonense Signs Ex-Brazil U-20 Prospect Caio Matheus After Unemployment

Portuguese club Portimonense has signed 21-year-old Brazilian forward Caio Matheus, a former youth international who was unattached after disciplinary issues, marking a new chapter for the promising player in Europe.

The agreement, pending a formal medical examination, is expected to keep Matheus at the club until 2027. His status as a free agent allows Portimonense to register him immediately outside of standard transfer windows.

Matheus arrives having been considered a significant talent in Brazilian football. He notably represented Brazil at the U-20 level, scoring one goal in three appearances. He is recognized for his technical skill and speed, capable of playing as a winger or behind the main striker.

His recent career, however, saw a rapid decline. Matheus joined Coritiba in early 2025. Disciplinary problems ultimately led to the early termination of his contract on September 1. He made just five appearances for the club.

Before Coritiba, Matheus progressed through the youth ranks at São Paulo. He made his senior debut for the club in 2022. He played two games for São Paulo, scoring one goal. São Paulo reportedly retains a percentage of his economic rights.

Being inactive since early September, Matheus is expected to require several weeks to reach full match fitness. He will then be available for selection by Portimonense coach Tiago Fernandes.
