Pope Francis canonizes Mama Antula, Argentina’s first saint

He Pope Francisco canonized this Sunday Mom Antula, who became the first holy woman in Argentina.

Milei, a right-wing outsider and libertarian, had called Francis an “idiot” and a “son of a bitch who preaches communism” before he ran for president, but he has softened his tone since taking office in December.

The pope “is the most important Argentine in history,” Milei told Radio Miter.

For his part, the pope said he had not paid much attention to Milei’s old insults and said in an interview that for him it depends on what incumbent politicians do.

Francis led a canonization Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica for María Antonia de Paz y Figueroa, better known as “Mama Antula,” an 18th-century ordained laywoman who renounced her family’s wealth to focus on charity and Jesuit spiritual exercises .

Milei sat in the front row at the service and exchanged a few words with the Pope at the end as they shook hands and hugged. The President will have a private audience with Francisco this Monday.
