Ponzio presented his farewell party

The former River midfielder Leonardo Ponzio officially launched his farewell game this Thursday and expressed his satisfaction at wearing the club’s shirt again, on September 21, at the Monumental stadium.

“It will be something nice to put on the River jersey for the last time. I am close to River and I like to be in the places where I was happy,” said Ponzio in one of the Monumental halls, accompanied by the club’s president, Jorge Brito; and Diego Díaz, owner of Win Fun Group, a company that organizes his farewell party.

“I always said that I would like to be remembered as a person; because the player is leaving. I developed with values, as they taught me at home and it was a privilege in this enormous institution. There are few of us who have that privilege, to be with 70,000 people every Sunday. I’m grateful. I didn’t dream of this and now it’s time to enjoy it,” said Ponzio, who couldn’t hold back his tears in front of the microphone. According to the former captain of River, the event that will mark his farewell to football will include the participation of legends from the Núñez club, plus the champions of the 2015 and 2018 Copa Libertadores.

“My family helped me a lot. And it’s very important professionally because it brings you down to earth. It’s the support for your career,” Ponzio said in a review of his professional life in front of a good number of media. The former Newell’s and Zaragoza, from Spain, remembered several coaches during his career, including José Pekerman and Matías Almeyda, but he made a separate paragraph for Marcelo Gallardo: “He had a lot of influence. He was 30 years old when I met him and he was already mature in life ; He corrected football things for me. We went together. After several dialogues it was very important.”

Ponzio assured that River occupies “a great place” in his life, while he valued the rest of the teams in which he played. “It’s been 12 years out of 21 in the profession. Not to mention that Newell’s allowed me to play in the first division. Zaragoza gave me the dream of playing in Europe.” And he added: “I went through all the stages in River. Idolatry is a complicated word. I feel very respected by people and I left everything for River. This does not end and respect values outside and inside the house.”

During the presentation, Ponzio chose his top 4 matches at the club. In the first place he chose his debut against Lanús, at the Monumental; then promotion to the first division with the victory against Almirante Brown in Núñez; and the most important final in the history of the club, the 3-1 victory in Madrid against Boca Juniors. Finally, he left the 4-0 win against Colón de Santa Fe in fourth place, in December 2021, to obtain the Champions Trophy, the last tournament he won.
