The director of the National Police, José Azambuya, addressed the recent shooting of Luis Alberto “Betito” Suárez and the measures being taken to prevent further clashes between criminal gangs in the area. Azambuya’s comments came after Suárez was shot in the abdomen and underwent surgery at a local hospital, only to leave without medical authorization in the early hours of Thursday.
As the situation on the hill continues to unfold, Azambuya assured that the police presence has been reinforced in recent hours, with significant operations already underway. This move aims to mitigate the risk of new confrontations and reduce the escalating violence that has resulted in homicides and left several people injured in recent weeks. The police director’s actions are a response to the rising tensions and the need for increased security in the area.
When questioned about potential reprisals following the attack on Suárez, Azambuya acknowledged that such a hypothesis is always a consideration. However, he emphasized that the police have been closely monitoring the situation and have made considerable progress in their efforts to stabilize the area. “In the last 24 to 48 hours, we have further reinforced our presence in the neighborhood and have maintained a strong presence from the outset,” Azambuya explained.
Azambuya also highlighted the police’s proactive approach, stating that they have conducted numerous operations involving different units. These efforts have led to the seizure of many weapons and cartridges, as well as the formalization of several individuals and the demolition of certain locations in coordination with other authorities. By taking a multifaceted approach, the police aim to address the complex issues plaguing the hill and work towards a more secure environment for its residents.
