Police: Dallas Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland Dead by Apparent Suicide

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has died in an apparent suicide. Frisco, Texas police confirmed the death in a press release. The Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause.

Kneeland’s body was discovered at 1:31 a.m. local time on Thursday, November 6. Authorities had been searching for the second-year player after he attempted to evade officers during a traffic stop. His car was later found abandoned following a crash on Dallas Parkway, leading police to believe he had fled on foot.

During the search, police learned of Kneeland’s potential suicidal ideation. This information came from a 911 call made by his girlfriend, Catalina. The NFL also called, expressing concern for one of its players’ safety.

A 911 operator stated in audio obtained by TMZ Sports, “We are talking to his girlfriend. She is trying to call his agent. We are trying to get her to call him first.” Catalina reportedly informed the operator that Kneeland had “a history of mental illness.”

Police utilized K-9 units and drones in the search. Dispatch audio captured an officer instructing, “Everyone stay with a partner. Do not search alone.”

The Cowboys confirmed Kneeland’s death Thursday morning. The team released a statement.

“With deep sadness, the Dallas Cowboys announce that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the team said. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

Jonathan Perzley, Kneeland’s agent, also issued a statement. He described himself as “devastated” by the news.

“I am devastated to confirm that my client and dear friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night,” Perzley said. “I watched him fight from being a hopeful young man at Western Michigan, with a dream, to becoming a respected professional for the Dallas Cowboys.”

Perzley continued, “Marshawn poured his heart into every play, every practice, and every moment on the field. Losing someone with his talent, spirit, and kindness is a pain I can hardly express in words.” He added, “I feel deep pain for his family, teammates, and everyone who loved him, and I hope they feel the support of the entire football community during this unimaginable time. I ask that you please give his loved ones the privacy and compassion they need as they deal with this tremendous loss.”

Kneeland’s death occurred just days after the Cowboys’ Monday Night Football loss to the Arizona Cardinals. In that game, he scored his first professional touchdown. He recovered a blocked kick in the end zone during the 27-17 defeat.

The NFL released its own statement. “We are deeply moved by the tragic news of the death of Marshawn Kneeland of the Cowboys,” the league stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, his family, friends, and teammates.” The NFL has offered support and counseling resources to the Cowboys.

The Cowboys are currently on their bye week. They are scheduled to return to action on November 17, playing the Las Vegas Raiders on the road.
