Polestar 5: 871 HP Electric Grand Tourer, Aviation Design Vision Realized

Polestar officially unveiled its high-performance Polestar 5 Grand Tourer, signaling the brand’s aggressive push into the premium electric vehicle market with a vehicle combining aviation-inspired design, advanced technology, and formidable power.

The four-door electric GT, first previewed as the Precept prototype in 2020, will be available in two versions. The top-tier Polestar 5 Performance model boasts 650 kilowatts (872 horsepower) and 1,015 Newton meters (749 lb-ft) of torque, propelling it from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) in just 3.2 seconds.

The Dual Motor variant delivers 550 kW (738 hp) and completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.9 seconds. Both models are electronically limited to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), underscoring their focus on a high-performance driving experience.

The new models are now available for order, with the Polestar 5 Dual Motor priced at approximately $132,400 USD (122,600 euros). The more powerful Polestar 5 Performance carries an indicative launch price of about $158,100 USD (146,400 euros).

A key technological advancement is the Polestar 5’s 800-volt electrical architecture, a first for the brand, enabling rapid charging capabilities of up to 350 kW on compatible DC chargers. This allows for a 10-80% battery charge in an estimated 22 minutes.

The Polestar 5 Dual Motor offers an estimated range of up to 670 kilometers (416 miles) under the European WLTP standard. The Performance variant provides up to 565 kilometers (351 miles) on a single charge.

The vehicle’s five-meter-long body takes strong design cues from aviation, featuring a sleek, wing-shaped aerodynamic profile and a Kamm-style tail. The design team has largely retained the aesthetic of the Precept prototype, which served as a vision for the brand’s future in design, technology, and sustainability.

Inside, the 4+1 seater Grand Tourer emphasizes both driver and passenger comfort. It features a 9-inch driver display, a 9.5-inch Head-Up Display, and a 14.5-inch central screen powered by Polestar’s Android Automotive operating system with built-in Google services.

Luxury amenities include a four-zone climate control system, along with heating, ventilation, and massage functions for passengers controllable via the central armrest. The vehicle also incorporates comprehensive driver assistance systems, including 11 vision cameras, a driver monitoring camera, and Pilot Assist for semi-autonomous driving up to 150 km/h (93 mph).

Underpinning the Polestar 5 is a new, custom-made Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA) constructed from hot-cured bonded aluminum. This lighter architecture also integrates a 112 kWh (106 kWh usable) lithium-ion battery from SK On.

To enhance its performance-focused characteristics, the vehicle features a compact double-wishbone front suspension and advanced damping systems. The Performance model uses adaptive BWI MagneRide dampers, capable of reacting within three milliseconds to road conditions.

The official presentation took place at a central venue in Porto, Portugal.
