Pliskova and Gauff achieve victories at the Berlin Open

Karolina Pliskova defeated Bianca Andreescu 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7) at the Berlin Open on Wednesday to reach a quarterfinal for the second time this year.

Czech Pliskova (seeded 4), who hit 17 aces against Kaia Kanepi in the first round, added 12 more against Canadian Andreescu. Pliskova had to come from behind after falling behind in the third and prevailed after 2 hours and 11 minutes in the grass-court tournament.

Pliskova tries to win her first title of the year. She reached the Wimbledon final a year ago.

American Coco Gauff, seeded seventh and a recent French Open finalist, opened with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win over compatriot Ann Li.

In a duel of Russians, Daria Kasatkina (seeded 6) came from behind to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Kasatkina will now face second-seeded Greek Maria Sakkari, who dispatched Australian Daria Saville 6-1, 7-5.

In addition, the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich stopped the participation of the local Andrea Petkovic, winning 6-4, 6-4. Petkovic stunned Garbiñe Muguruza on Tuesday.
