PlayStation Turns 30: Europe, North America Celebrate Gaming Milestone

Sony marks 30 years of PlayStation in Europe and North America.

Thirty years. It’s a long run in any field, especially in the fast-moving world of entertainment. This September, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is looking back at three decades of PlayStation across Europe and North America. What started in 1995, a year after its Japan debut, quickly became more than just a console. It transformed how millions play, connect, and experience digital worlds. This journey reads like the story of a legendary sports team, building a dynasty one game-changing moment at a time.

Over these three decades, PlayStation didn’t just keep up; it led the charge. The brand moved with technology and culture, creating iconic memories and reshaping the entire entertainment industry. The first PlayStation console alone sold over 102 million units worldwide. Since then, the brand has solidified its place with five main console generations, each pushing the boundaries.

The PlayStation 2, which arrived in 2000, still holds the title as the best-selling console ever, with more than 160 million units sold globally. The PlayStation 3 then opened a new online chapter, introducing the PlayStation Network and the PlayStation Plus subscription service. Not long after, the PlayStation 4 brought fresh social tools like the Share button. Players could stream their games live and use Share Play to invite friends. Then came the PlayStation 4 Pro in 2016, boosting games with 4K visuals, HDR support, and double the graphics power.

More recently, the PlayStation 5 truly raised the bar. It offered lightning-fast loading times, immersive 3D audio, and the groundbreaking DualSense controller. This year, 2024, saw the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro. It delivers the most stunning visual experience ever seen on a PlayStation console.

But the PlayStation story stretches beyond just these console launches over the last 30 years. The brand also ventured into portable gaming with devices like the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita. It dove headfirst into virtual reality too, launching PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2. The VR2 brought new features like haptic feedback in the headset, eye tracking, and even finger touch detection, making virtual worlds feel even more real.

With each new step, new games etched themselves into players’ hearts. From Gran Turismo on the original PlayStation to God of War on PlayStation 2, and The Last of Us on PlayStation 3. Horizon Zero Dawn lit up the PlayStation 4, and more recently, ASTRO BOT has captured imaginations on PlayStation 5. These titles truly show the brand’s incredible creative and cultural muscle.

Hideaki Nishino, CEO of the Platform Business Group at SIE, spoke with pride about this journey. "We’ve had five fantastic console generations since our first PlayStation launched," he said. "We’re proud of the innovations and experiences we’ve given the PlayStation community over the years, always keeping up with tech advancements." He added that the goal was always to make sure "PlayStation is the best place to play." He confirmed the brand will continue looking to the future and innovating as technology changes. This ensures players will enjoy every memorable moment on their ongoing PlayStation adventure.

The 30th-anniversary celebrations reflect PlayStation’s dedication to new ideas and its community of fans. Special initiatives for this milestone included the PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection. This was a limited edition set of PlayStation 5 products with a design inspired by the very first model. They also launched the Shapes of Play collection, a new line of products inspired by PlayStation’s famous controller icons. Digital soundtracks from classic games became available, and "My First GT" offered a free demo of Gran Turismo 7. This demo was designed for players of all skill levels to enjoy.

Another highlight is the upcoming book, "PlayStation: The First 30 Years." This 400-page visual journey explores the brand’s history. It includes rare photos and behind-the-scenes documents, showing PlayStation’s evolution from early ideas to its most iconic products. The book was recently announced on the Official PlayStation Blog and will be available next spring.

To mark this 30-year anniversary, SIEP Portugal also invited various personalities. These well-known figures from gaming, television, music, sports, and entertainment shared their favorite PlayStation memories from the past three decades. The outcome is a video that celebrates PlayStation’s history and the strong emotional bonds it forged across different generations. This video is available to watch here.

As a fun side note for this occasion, SIEP Portugal also highlighted some unique moments from its history. For example, the game SingStar Portugal Hits, released in 2010 for PlayStation 3, was the first in the series fully dedicated to Portuguese music. It featured hits from artists like Marco Paulo, Tony Carreira, and Buraka Som Sistema. During the launch of the white PlayStation Portable (PSP), stylist Katty Xiomara crafted a lingerie bag. This was inspired by the console’s design, mixing fashion and technology in a memorable campaign piece. In 2016, when PlayStation VR launched, designer Nuno Gama presented a clothing collection on the Lisboa Fashion Week runway. It was inspired by the virtual reality headset, showing a clear link between tech innovation and artistic creativity.
