Pittsburgh Steelers hire Brian Flores as defensive assistant

Brian Flores is back in the NFL.

The Pittsburgh Steelers hired the former Miami Dolphins coach as a senior defensive assistant. Flores will work with the Pittsburgh linebackers, a group that includes NFL Defensive Player of the Year TJ Watt.

His hiring comes just under three weeks after Flores, who is African American, sued the NFL and three teams for alleged racist hiring practices after he was fired by Miami. Flores led the Dolphins to back-to-back winning seasons before he was fired in January.

Flores indicated that he will keep the lawsuit even if he finds another coaching job. He joins a restructured group of defensive personnel in Pittsburgh after coordinator Keith Butler retired. Teryl Austin was promoted to take over from Butler earlier this month.

“I’m excited to have Brian Flores join our staff given his history of developing and teaching defensive players during his time in the NFL,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement. “Brian’s resume speaks for itself and I am excited to add his knowledge to the team.”

Tomlin is the longest-tenured black head coach and only three African-American coaches led teams this season. The other two are Flores and David Culley with Houston and who was fired. Houston subsequently hired Lovie Smith, who is also black, and Miami hired Mike McDaniel, who is biracial.
