Robert Pigozzi, of water skiing, received the highest Athlete of the Year award at the Olympic Gala awards held by the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) this Sunday in the auditorium of the Dominican Sports Pavilion of Fame.

Pigozzi, a gold medalist at the last Pan American Games in Peru, received one million pesos as a prize for his distinction.

In addition to Robert Pigozzi, María Dimitrova, karate, were also nominated for the highest award; Ana Rosa, from judo, and Bethania de la Cruz, from volleyball.

Fight for a dream
“You have to fight to achieve your dream. Thank you for this award, ”said Pigozzi shortly after receiving the distinction from the president of the COD, Antonio Acosta, and the general secretary Gilberto García, and other personalities.

The president of the COD, Acosta, highlighted the effort of the Government authorities, through the Ministry of Sports, as well as the Creso Group for the support to guarantee the preparation of the athletes.

Acosta highlighted the performance of the Dominican delegation in the Pan American Games held in Lima, Peru, and where the Dominican Republic ranked ninth by winning a total of 40 medals, including 11 gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze.

“We have faith that this delegation will perform well and that the sports movement, the leaders and the people will receive the athletes on their return from Colombia, with joy.

in each of the actions so that, as in Tokyo, we have a good participation in Colombia, “said Acosta, who defined the country as an” important challenge “in the First Junior Pan American Games that will be held from 25 this month to December 5 in Cali Valle.

Luis Mejía, former president of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), received a plaque in recognition of his career in the sport.

Iván García Guerra, from the Dominican Federation of Art and Culture, and Dr. Lissette Sánchez, from the Dominican Federation of Sports Medicine, also received recognition plaques.

The Olympic Gala opened with the song “A Spring for the World”, performed by singer Nini Caffaro.

Diomary La Mala delighted those present with a medley of ballads by Dominican artists such as Anthony Ríos, Cheo Zorrilla, Doña Leonor Porcella de Brea, Tati Salas Jackelin Estévez, among others.
