Pidcock and Bernal’s accident: “Now it is very dangerous to train the time trials”

The serious accident of Egan Bernal while training with a time trial bike in Colombia after crashing into a bus has once again highlighted the risk that road cyclists can suffer while training, and even more so if we refer to training for time trials.

On this fact, the British cyclist and Bernal’s partner in the Ineos Tom Pidcock wanted to pronounce, who believes that cyclists are increasingly taking more extreme positions when defending themselves on the ‘goat’ to cut seconds off the clock. “Positions are becoming more extreme and we spend a lot of time adapting to them. You don’t necessarily see where you’re going,” he told BBC Sport.

Pidcock acknowledges that it is increasingly difficult to train safely to prepare for road time trials and they ask that solutions be found to avoid this type of mishap. “Obviously it’s much more dangerous now to train on a time trial bike. I don’t think we need to stop making progress against the I think, but we need to think about how we can train safely and try to avoid these accidents.”

Pidcock himself confessed that he also suffered an accident while training with a time trial bike in early June last year in a mishap in which he broke his collarbone before winning Olympic gold in MTB almost a month later. “I fell on a time trial bike, Ben Turner also fell on a time trial bike. Now it has been Egan who has fallen due to riding in an extreme position. I think those are the causes of these recent accidents”, the British stressed.
