Piatek’s goal gives Fiorentina the victory, 1-0 against Atalanta

With a goal from Krzysztof Piatek, Fiorentina defeated Atalanta 1-0 in Serie A on Sunday and remains in the fight for European cups.

Piatek capitalized on a cross from Argentine attacker Nico González to score the winner in the 56th minute. It was the Polish striker’s fifth goal in six games for Fiorentina after being loaned out by Hertha Berlin last month.

Fiorentina beat Atalanta for the third time in all competitions this season.

Five minutes after Piatek’s goal, the video assistant referee intervened to cancel Ruslan Malinovskyi’s equalizer for an offside position. Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini was sent off for challenging the decision.

Atalanta showed up decimated due to injuries, with Jeremie Boga the only available striker.

The victory allowed Fiorentina to climb to seventh place with 42 points, two behind fifth-place Atalanta. Later, Inter could displace Milan from the lead if they win Sassuolo at home.

Milan held to a 2-2 draw against bottom side Salernitana on Sunday, leaving Inter two points off the top. In addition, Inter has two games less disputed than its city rival.
