Phishing scam going around Arbitrum Discord amid hype

Amid all the hype surrounding the highly anticipated Arbitrum (ARB) airdrop, many people see the opportunity to take advantage of this situation. Earlier this week, you could read in the altcoin news that within days of the official announcement of the airdrop, no less than 273 phishing websites were launched posing as Arbitrum.

Hackers have now also managed to share a phishing link in Arbitrum’s official Discord server.

Arbitrum developer hacked

Today, blockchain-focused security firm CetriK revealed the possibility of a phishing link being distributed through the Arbitrum Discord server. It is suspected that a hacked Discord account belonging to one of the project’s developers was used to share a fake announcement with an associated phishing link.

The message on Discord offered ”the opportunity to acquire an additional stake in the Arbitrum DAO Governance to claim,” while citing issues from the first token claim. However, the supporting URL misspelled Arbitrum as ”Arbtirum” – a deception technique used in a phishing attack.

Clicking on such a link usually navigates unsuspecting victims to a website where they are asked to enter personal information such as the private key from a wallet. This would give the hacker full access to the crypto in the wallet in question.

However, clicking on the link this time leads to a white website with the text ”Astaghfirullah”, which translates to ”I seek forgiveness from God”. In modern times it can also be used as an expression of disbelief or disapproval.

This is how the Arbitrum airdrop went

The airdrop did not go entirely smoothly: the website of the Arbitrum Foundation was down for more than an hour when the ARB tokens could be claimed. Also, 37% of the total 1.1 billion ARB allocated for the airdrop has yet to be claimed. This equates to 428 million ARB tokens, which are worth approximately $539 million at the current exchange rate.
