A massive explosion rocked the Philippines as the Kanlaon volcano erupted early Tuesday, spewing ash and smoke 4,000 meters into the air. The blast sent ash falling on nearby villages, raising health concerns for residents.
The volcano, located on Negros Island in the central Philippines, is one of the country’s most active. Its eruption caused no reported injuries or deaths but prompted fears of a larger disaster.
Volcano Alert
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level to 3 out of 5, warning of a possible bigger eruption. Kanlaon volcano stands 2,435 meters tall and is among the 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines.
In October, it erupted, forcing hundreds of villagers to flee to emergency shelters. The Philippines lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country is hit by around 20 typhoons a year, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations.
