Philadelphia loses the MLS Cup and the World Series in a single day

The city of Philadelphia was looking for two champions in the same week. On the one hand, Philadelphia Union disputed the MLS Cup as champions of the Eastern Conference, while on the other side were the Philadelphia Phillies, champions of the MLB National League looking to win the World Series. However, what could have been a day of joy ended up leaving faces of disappointment.

Earlier in the week, there was a chance that both the Union and Phillies could be crowned on Saturday. Said option was diluted for the representatives of the city in the MLB, this after the loss they suffered 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park to put the Astros ahead in the series.

On the other hand, the game did not start very well for Jim Curtin’s men in the MLS Cup. A shot from Kellyn Acosta ended up deflecting Jakob Glesnes, and the ball ended up slipping into the nets due to the useless reaction of goalkeeper Andre Blake. The Banc of California Stadium was exploding with joy, but not the city of Philadelphia.

The Union fought back to send the game into extra time after a 2-2 lead at the end of 90 minutes. It looked like Jake Elliott was giving the club the championship, but Gareth Bale ruined the plans of Curtin and companyin addition to the fact that the three shots they tried missed in the penalty shootout.

Hours later, the Phillies knew they couldn’t be crowned, but they wanted to at least force a seventh game. Kyle Schwarber hit a home run that put Rob Thomson’s men ahead, however, a fateful sixth inning, allowed four runs that gave him the victory and the title to the Astros.

Drought in Philly

Except for the Philadelphia Eagles, who in 2017 were the last team from the city of Philadelphia to win a title in the major US sports leagues, the joys that others have brought to the city in the state of Pennsylvania are few.

The Philadelphia Phillies will complete 14 titles without being able to win the World Series. In 2008 it was the last time that the Major Leagues were able to celebrate the United States baseball title. The NBA 76ers haven’t celebrated a title since 1983.when they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in four games, while the The NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers haven’t won since 1975.

Of all the teams in the city of Philadelphia, the Union of the MLS is the only one that has not yet been able to win a championship. Although they came very close on Saturday in Los Angeles, they ultimately fell on penalties and missed a rare opportunity.

The illusions do not end for the city, because precisely the Philadelphia Eagles go undefeated after nine weeks in the NFL. That doesn’t guarantee Nick Sirianni’s men that they will win the 2023 Super Bowl, but at least it gives hope to a wounded city.
