Petrusev emerges in La Fonteta against a doubtful Valencia

It was not the best game for Valencia Basket. In fact, it was one of the worst in the Euroleague against a Red Star without Vildoza or Campazzo. But even so, Harper had a triple at the buzzer to have won the game (75-77). Perhaps this is the best reading for Mumbrú. With 63-72, with two and a half minutes to go, and the arrow going down, anyone else would have given up. The taronja group fought and came up with options until the last second. He forced Red Star’s failures until he had a triple winner on his hands. Eight meters, yes. But there was a shot. And that was because of the local fight in the last plays.

However, you don’t have to reduce everything to that last shot either. Because Valencia was more bad than good. It is true that he adjusted his defense in the second part. But in attack a player was missing to lead at key moments. In addition, he allowed himself to grab several offensive rebounds that rescued a Red Star when he was starting to get scared. Jones was once again the top scorer and assistant (16+5) but he was somewhat lacking in fuel and missed on the shot from three (0 of 4). Especially bad was Dubljevic’s game. Only two points and -5 efficiency, missing a couple of very striking baskets under the rim.

Instead, across the street was Filip Petrusev. The Serbian center did what he wanted beyond a couple of minutes in which Pradilla was able to defend him aggressively. His numbers were MVP: 25 points, 9 rebounds and 36 PIR credits. The extaronja Nedovic seconded him in scoring (19 points and 6 assists) although he was about to regret the missed free kick that allowed Harper to have the triple winner in his hands.

Valencia Basket was overwhelmed from the initial jump by Hurricane Petrusev. The Serbian center completed a dreamy first half (16 points and 25 PIR credits), partly due to his success and partly due to the candidness of the Taronja defense. The taronjas started with Jones, which brings a plus of confidence. The Armenian-American dedicated himself to assisting this time. Rivero, Alexander and Pradilla benefited from his passes. Nedovic, ex of Valencia, also scored too easily.

In the second quarter, Harper’s departure spurred his team. An assist and six straight points from the point guard put Valencia ahead (34-33). But this time it was Holland, with two consecutive triples, the one who accompanied Petrusev, who scored and rebounded in the face of the passivity of the defenders. A three-pointer from Radebaugh and three free kicks from Rivero brought Valencia closer again (42-43). But four points from Petrusev and Ilic put Ivanovic’s men back in the lead before going through the changing rooms.

From there Valencia came out in another way. More intense, with Pradilla making his breath feel on Petrusev, and with the firm intention of running the track. The sensations changed, although two incomprehensible mistakes by Dubljevic under the ring did not allow the Fonteta pressure cooker to heat up to the highest level. Only 12 points were conceded by Valencia in the third quarter. The bad thing is that in attack he always lacked something to get ahead. A basket by Petrusev, the only one in this quarter from the center, left it 58-61, with a quarter to play.

The game was being the last bite of the hard nougat this Christmas. Each basket cost a world to both. Holland and Nedovic stretched the lead again (58-65, min. 31) but a triple from Harper gave the Valencian fans hope again. Yet again at the moment of getting ahead he shrugged his hand. Nobody had the day in Valencia. And the most reliable, like Dubi or Jones, played very unlikely things. Arostegui missed a free to get to one point. And Petrusev, with eight points in a row, set the maximum for the Serbs (63-72, min. 37). Valencia gasped. A triple from Pradilla, with suspense, and a tackle from Jones offered an extra life to the taronjas. Three more free for Prepelic after a review by the referees, made Ivanovic’s face change. Nedovic and Petrusev did not miss from the line and Jones scored a quick layup. With 10.8 to play (and three points down) Jones gave up the triple and scored from two: 75-76, with 4.7 seconds to play. Nedovic missed a free and Harper crossed the court to hit a game-winning three-pointer. But the iron spat out the taronja triumph.
