Petro de Luanda delivered a commanding 4-1 victory over league leaders Recreativo do Libolo on Saturday, dramatically tightening the race at the top of the Angolan football championship.
The decisive win, played in Luanda, propelled the defending champions to 9 points, now just four points adrift of Recreativo do Libolo, who maintain their lead with 13 points after five matches in the Girabola, Angola’s top-tier league.
Brazilian forward Tiago Reis was a key player for Petro de Luanda, netting goals in the 11th and 57th minutes. Jonathan Toro added another goal in the 66th minute, followed by Vanilson in the 74th. Fuca scored the sole goal for Recreativo do Libolo.
In other significant results from the sixth round, Bravos do Maquis climbed to third place in the standings with 10 points after securing a 2-0 victory against Wiliete de Benguela. Lito opened the scoring in the first minute, with Cuxixima adding a second in the 40th.
Newly promoted Redonda FC celebrated its first league win of the season, achieving a surprising 1-0 upset against Académica do Lobito. Denny scored the winning goal for Redonda in the 29th minute.
Meanwhile, 1.º de Agosto’s struggles continued, as they recorded their fourth consecutive draw in four games after a 0-0 stalemate against Sagrada Esperança in Angola’s Luanda Norte province. The result deepens a crisis for the club.
Sixth-round matches on Friday, October 31, saw Guelson FC defeat Kabuscorp do Palanca 2-0.
Saturday, November 1, fixtures included Bravos do Maquis 2-0 Wiliete de Benguela, Petro de Luanda 4-1 Recreativo do Libolo, Sagrada Esperança 0-0 1.º de Agosto, and Redonda FC 1-0 Académica do Lobito.
