Pet spending grows 57% among Spaniards

The loveThe love for pets is not only filling the hearts of Spaniards, but also their shopping carts. According to the latest wave of the Consumer Insights Report by Aliexpress, Spaniards spend an average of €21 per month on pet products. This significant spending has propelled pet objects into the top 5 spending priorities in Spain, standing just behind food and drinks, fashion, beauty and fashion, and sport and entertainment. In fact, pet spending has even surpassed traditional categories like accessories and telephony, reflecting the central role companion animals play in Spanish homes and the growing demand for products focused on animal welfare.

It’s worth noting that one in two Spanish households lives with a companion animal, and a staggering 80% of them consider their pets to be part of the family. This trend is particularly pronounced among young adults, with 25- to 34-year-olds leading the charge in pet spending. They invest an average of €32 per month, a 57% increase compared to the rest of the population over the last three months, and even surpassing expenditure on products for maternity and childhood.

This shift in spending priorities is closely tied to age, as young adults prioritize their pets more. Despite the current climate of spending containment, where nearly 73% of Spaniards in this age range have declared that they will prioritize value for money in 2025, purchases for pets remain unaffected and continue to be a priority. In contrast, younger individuals between 18 and 24 years old have not yet reached the same levels of spending, likely due to their reduced ability to have pets, and spend around €18 per month.

The love for pets is also evident on special occasions. A notable 7% of Spaniards celebrated Valentine’s Day with their pets, a trend more pronounced among young adults aged 25-34, where the percentage rises to 13%. As a result, the World Day to Love Your Pet, celebrated on February 20, is solidifying its position as a key date in the calendar for those seeking to honor their furry life partners.
