Pere Miró: “There is no deadline for the unitary candidacy of Aragon and Catalonia”

The Spaniard Pere Miró, special advisor to the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)assured this Tuesday, about the possibility of a unitary candidacy between Catalonia and Aragon for the 2030 Winter Games, that “there is no deadline” to take a decision.

This was commented in a statement to Catalunya Ràdio. Three days before the expiration of the previous term established by the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) to reach an agreement, Miró insisted that for the IOC it is “better than subtracting”, in reference to a unitary or solitary candidacy.

“From the IOC, the process to choose an organizing city or country goes through a process of permanent dialogue and we have not set any date. This dialogue is being developed not only with the Pyrenees but with other cities in the world. So for us that limit doesn’t exist,” he added.

He also referred to the fact that the IOC does not oblige to carry out any type of consultation in the territory: “Yes, it is mandatory to demonstrate this support in one way or another. Would the support of the mayors be enough? If it is the way the candidacy chooses, it will be up to us to judge this sample presented”.

Questioned about whether he won the ‘no’ in that consultation, Miró assured that the candidate would have to say what position to adopt based on that. “It would be necessary to inform the IOC and the IOC judge what they inform us,” he added.

Miró said that in his long career in the IOC he has lived “Hundreds of potential candidates and there are always internal problems, of course.”

“If everyone wants to be part of this Olympic project for us it is a reading that means the interest in the Games remains very important. As I have said in hundreds of candidacies, in the end there is an agreement and, within my neutrality, I hope that it is the strongest possible and that it continues,” he argued.

As for the possibility that Aragón presents a solo candidacy, Miró recalled that Jaca has presented himself twice.

“I think it was at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. Aragon has great potential, and Catalonia too. Within my neutrality there is a report from an IOC technician who was in Catalonia and valued the facilities very positively. Therefore, Catalonia has great potential, a great level, Aragon has another… and from here on, it is always better to add than to subtract,” he assured.

And about the option of a solo candidacy from Catalonia, Miró commented that the global context and the potential of the rest of the candidates must be assessed.

“There is a very great interest, as it is public, from Salt Lake City (United States), Sapporo (Japan) and almost certainly from Vancouver (Canada). So decisions are not made based only on the potential of one candidacy, but on this and others,” he said.

Miró commented that Alejandro Blanco, president of the COE, believes “deeply” in the candidacy: “He believes in the will of Catalonia to push the candidacy forward. And he also believes in the will of Aragon and he wants to push this candidacy forward and is doing everything he can to make it so. He is doing a commendable job.”
